Yeah neither do I. Saw one one the road today. Totally forgot it was a thing that exists. Sad how much cleaner the roof looks on this than a new 4-series convertible. There was also a Sebring hardtop vert that I actually remember... Besides the VW Eos, has anyone else tried this besides luxury brands? No a Wrangler doesn’t count.

That... doesn’t look bad at all.

They even did a GXP.

Ford.
Peugeot did twice

They leak so damn bad though.

Also Mazda

Ford did it in the 50s
Mitsubishi did it in the 90s (3000GT convertible, and was even available as a VR4 too)

Yeah probably why the BMW has a different folding design.

They also had a terrible spoiler available.

Chevy did it. SSR

The roof does look fairly neat, but the amount of bum you get behind the rear doors is crazy gross.

My sister has a black G6 hardtop convertible and loves it.

I saw a lot of the 206CC’s when I lived in London ‘04-05. Pretty popular. Had forgotten about it since moving back to the US. IIRC there was both a 206 and 307 CC so they've done it at least thrice.

Didn't know about the 3000GT

Ugh don't remind me. A few years ago I had to see one every day. So damn ugly.

I also had completely forgotten about the 3000GT... I think I remember a soft top, was that a thing too?

2007
Peugeot was the first automaker to introduce a four-door retractable hardtop convertible in the2007 Peugeot 407 Macarena; the convertible hardtop could fold back in just 30 seconds.

Interesting stuff there.

Ooh good catch. For some reason I didn’t even make that connection. I’ve been seeing a big uptick of these on the road. I suspect a lot of people were hoarding them thinking values would go up and are now driving them/selling to people who will drive them now that they realize these aren't special enough for that to ever happen.

Thanks. My knowledge on classic JDM stuff is pretty mich limited to things that were in GranTurismo and/or F&F.

Same here, I just learned about it through a Google search for this and a couple cool facts in there. I'm going to look up more on the soarer

My friend’s mom has one of those G6 convertibles. She loves it.

The soft top was an aftermarket conversion.

That’s the second similar comment. They are unique enough that I understand how they could have fans. AFAIK these were actually pretty mechanically similar to the Saab 9-3, but with pushrod V6's in place of the turbo 4's, so I doubt they are all that bad to drive.

Neat. I swear someone in my neighborhood had a soft top first gen (or maybe it was a Stealth) when I was a kid. Never realized it was aftermarket. Probably pretty rare.

Right when Pontiac was starting to get good, they killed it.

Had a G6 sedan before and went to car meets with it. There were like 2 of them. I know one traded hers in for an Eclipse.

If it was a 3rd or 4th gen that seems like a downgrade.
![]() 08/01/2016 at 00:04 |

Yeah... things like this, the Solstice, and the G8 all had compromises (shitty interiors, dated platforms and motors, panel gaps for days, odd parts-bin choices), but it showed they were starting to turn around. I’ve always felt like if Pontiac had lived for one more generation they could have had some cool stuff. I would have loved to have seen the Regal GS as a Grand Prix GTP with a different grille, red gauge lighting, cloth seats, less gizmos and a price tag $3k lower.

the solstice was really close...
test drove a bunch of the gxps this summer with the gf, but settled on a tt. they drove great, and looked sweet, even though the top was a disaster to put down. went with the audi mostly because the interior fit and finish was just head and shoulders above.
rest in peace pontiac.

Economy killed Pontiac right as they started to get it. The G6 was a perfectly good car in it’s class.

I'm happy to see these on the road. Initially I liked them, then I hated them, now they are growing on me again.

Mitsubishi Colt CZC. Peugeot 206cc, 207cc, 307cc. Renault Megane CC. Ford Focus CC. These are EU market ones that I can remember.

At one time there were loads of non-luxury CCs.
Focus:
Astra:
Renault Mégane (they’ve done three models so far):
Nissan Micra
Mitsubishi Colt:
Mostly gone now because too much weight = too much CO2.

Fair. I guess I lump these in with the luxury brands. My neighbor across the street has a dark red one. Her dog is always getting out and she drives around the neighborhood with the top down yelling for him to come back. This happens weekly.
![]() 08/01/2016 at 06:39 |

Forgot about the Focus and Micra, never even knew about the Colt! I find it interesting that these did well enough in Europe for lots of makes to try, but there were so few in the US.

After Peugeot brought out the 206 they became quite a thing in the 2000s. Then they faded away again. I think Renault and Peugeot are the last two makers still standing.

That is one of the tackiest cars I've ever seen.

Well it was basically this underneath the fancy Pininfarina body:
So yeah, not quite full-on luxury, but still a nicer variant of an otherwise entry-level car.

Speaking of which, a Mazda3 CC that they could've spun off of that would’ve been pretty cool by me.
